Introduction

- This site is intended to prepare and inform the reader,
of the aims and approaches embodied in the renovation work of Julian
Swift Period House Renovations.
On these pages, you will find many photographs of projects designed
and executed by our company.
We have included historical examples of original work, in order to
highlight the authenticity of our methods.
Be sure to notice the occasions where the original is indistinguishable
from the new,
and also where the new is designed to sympathetically complement the
old.
- How we do it:
When working on a period property, especially one that has been altered
and then re-altered over centuries,
it is most important to have a full understanding of the building's
provenance, history and the order of alteration.
Equally important is ofcourse
the clients feelings on the matter.
Naturally this will take time, especially when considering that in
many cases, until work has begun, or at
least until an investigative and intrusive survey has been carried
out, much will remain hidden from the eye.
The design process requires a period of fermentation, in order for
us apply our extensive experience
to the task of creating a functional and beautiful home.
Attention to detail, and a consistency in conjuring unique atmospheric
qualities, are hallmarks of julian swift.
The sometimes lengthy considerations involved, may appear to present
issues regarding the certainty
of completing a project economically, to the desired standard. However,
these questions are resolved
by setting a budget and a bench mark specification (combined in a
document called the Priced Quantity)
at the start of the project. This document can be amended later as
the design process develops.
Such amendments can generally be managed by curtailing money spent
on a less important aspect of
the design, and then transferring those funds to a more deserving
part.
We have found through experience, despite any contrary appearance
to the cursory eye,
that this is the best way to economically achieve the desired quality
and specification.
Please enjoy perusing these pages.
Look carefully at the details in each picture, they have all had careful
thought applied to them.
We hope that you will find them helpful in understanding how your
property could be developed
and in making decisions regarding detail therein.
Remember, however, that each example given is appropriate in its own
setting,
and that it may not translate to another building.
